Today, Mrs. Brecht’s 4th period ELA class visited the library in preparation for their research projects. They will spend two days with Mr. Dutcher to learn about and practice paraphrasing. Then Mr. Dutcher will share with the class several different search tools available in the library, including the library catalog, Gale Power Search, One Search federated searching, and Media Connect streaming video.

This week, Ms. Wilcox’ s students are studying about the Holocaust during World War II. Mr. Dutcher showed the students how to search the Destiny Quest library catalog, how to use Gale Power Search, how to use One Search federated searches, and Media Connect streaming video. Ms. Wilcox also directed her students to our ABC-CLIO databases and Gale’s World History Collection.

This week, Ms. Wilcox’ s European Studies students are studying about famous people involved in the Cold War. Mr. Dutcher showed the students how to search the Destiny Quest library catalog, how to use Gale Power Search, how to use One Search federated searches, and Media Connect streaming video. Citations found everywhere. Mr. Dutcher also introduced them toCurrent Biography Yearbook and the Destiny Quest and Gale’s At My Library (School Edition) moble apps for their smartphones or tablet computers.
After seeing all of the databases, one student commented as the bell rang to end the class, ‘Wow- we’re in the 21st Century!” Yes indeed, you are, at Dryden High School, in the library media center.

This afternoon the HS mythology students visited with Mr. Dutcher to learn about library resources that they could use for their mythology research projects. They saw how to use Gale PowerSearch to find periodical resources. Then they reviewed how to use the library catalog to search for books and how to login so that they could use One Search to cross-search the library catalog and the research databases at the same time. Finally, they looked streaming video resources available through OCM BOCES Media Connect.

Today and Friday, Ms. Snow’s 11th grade ELA classes will return to the libray to learn about and practice evaluating webpage information. We will also talk about MLA-style citations of webpages and othe forms of information found on the Internet, discuss the importance of authority and vetted resources, and discuss what can happen in the real world when inforamtion is not used properly.

On Monday and Tuesday, Ms. Tasselmyer’s 6th grade ELA students visited the libray. Today we looked at how to find cool and interesting books using the library catalog, TitlePeak, and Teachingbooks.net. Tomorrow we will talk about writing reviews of the books they are reading this marking period and how to post these in the library catalog. Have lots of excitement, these students.

This afternoon I welcomed the new teachers that have been hired this school year to the library media center to introduce myself and to talk about some of the services and resources availble here to promote student learning and achievement. I showed them how to log into the library catalog and some of the neat things they can do with it (federated searching, creating resource lists, writing book reviews, etc.). We also looked at MediaConnect through OCM BOCES, exploring and discussing their media-lending library as well as the streaming video resources. These new teachers were here with their teacher mentors.
